The Hui demonstrated at the Scottish Festival on April 2-3, 2011

Kapiolani Park

A BIG Mahalo to Helen Rau, Virginia Taylor, Mary Macmillan, Cynthia McCreedy, and Karen Van Tine. Also, thanks to Patricia Steinhof for her tartan setup on her brand new table loom.

Lots of people were curious about the making of kilts. Conveniently located at the “Clan and Cultural Tent” the Hui table was the center of attraction. Our spinners explained and demonstrated the process of creating beautiful yarn from wool and lama allowing children and adults to spin. Followed by the weavers who demonstrated the actual weaving of tartan, also guiding the young minds to sit at the loom and weave. The tartan demo was made of bamboo fiber, and that impressed everybody! Helen worked on a vertical loom making a rag rug, a new visual experience for most.

The whole thing was very well received. It was a pleasure to spin and weave to the sound of bagpipes. The work of the Hui truly complemented the activities of the Scottish festival. So, we will most likely do this again next year.

- Diversity is the key word in this exhibition.  Proudly, ten Hui members were selected to present their diverse fiber art talents in this exhibit.  All entries hold a distinctive interpretation about boundaries and create a worthwhile show for all to see.  Lastly, as scholar and juror Carole Beadle says in her statement … “Immerse yourself in examining artists’ concerns for our environment in recycled and reused materials, unique fiber forms appropriating ideas from other fine arts, and boundaries being moved to new and exciting places.”
